A couple of years later, the family moved back to China.Liên doted on her younger siblings. When their parents were not home, She would sneak out of the house and take them to all sorts of places, such as to the park to play or taking a stroll around the block to admire the flowers in the neighbors' front yard. This was an early sign of her rebelliousness. Their older brother found them coming home from one of their little adventures one day and scolded the children before hugging each of them. When the parents found out about this some time later, they were shocked. After that day, Liên got into a lot of verbal fights with her father over the amount of freedom she had, which eventually lead to the mother and father having arguments. One day, the father lashed out at Liên, which mortified the mother and the siblings who were watching. The father left the family the following morning, taking Leon and Mei with him. Their mother shed god knows how many tears that day. Lien and her older brother tried to comfort her, but nothing they did seemed to help. What could they do? They were just children. Liên inherited the mother's surname rather than the father's. She refused to have the surname of the man who attacked her before leaving his wife a sobbing mess. However, the older brother kept their father's surname, which Liên did not understand why at the time. Liên was afraid that Leon and Mei would forget all about her, their older brother, and their mother. The family struggled to keep the farm. Liên spent most of her days cultivating wet rice with her mother. Her mother would tell Lien stories about her childhood and how lucky they were to be alive today. She would also tell Liên to stay strong for the sake of the family and farm. Some nights, Liên could hear her mother sobbing from the other room. At the age of ten, Liên decided that she had enough and wrote her father a nasty letter. However, the response was far from what she had expected. A month after sending the letter, Liên received a bottle of nail polish in the mail from someone by the name of Mei Lihn Wang. The name looked familiar so she consulted her mother and was told that Mei was her younger sister. The handwriting obviously was not that of Mei, but then again they have been separated for all of these years. Anything could happen when you are thousands of miles apart. Liên wrote another letter to her father asking about the siblings, but all she got back was some more nail polish. After a couple of more attempts to make contact with her siblings who lived thousands of miles away, she gave up. Yet she still kept receiving the nail polish from. Liên was not really sure why Mei did not send money to help their mother instead of nail polish. Mei was probably raised to think that their mother was a horrible person. She could not wait to tell Mei the truth when they meet in person. If they ever did that is. Even so, Liên treasured ever single bottle of nail polish she received from Mei, which was ever so often. One day, their mother died in a horrible automobile accident while driving home from the grocery store. The police said that she was driving under the influence of opium, but Liên refused to believe it. The woman who had told her all of these years to be strong would not allow a substance to take her life. Liên cried for days. Liên continued to raise and harvest wet rice in the fields while her older brother supported what was left of the family with the money he earned with his new job as a taxi driver. She got good grades in school, despite her lack of attention to lectures. One day, Liên received an invitation from Accademia Mondiale. To be honest, she was shocked to have received such an offer from a high-class school. Seeing this as an opportunity become a nurse, and possibly raise more money to support the farm and her older brother, Liên left to attend Accademia Mondiale. HOBBIES: - Farming: Liên has been working as a farmer most of her life before entering the academy. It just stuck.- Grooming: Especially finger nails. What else was Liên supposed to do with all of the nail polish she kept on receiving from Mei? - Medicine: Liên almost always carried around a medical kit with her wherever she goes. - Music: This is an important part of Liên's way of life, given the culture she came from. - Self-defense: Every woman should know how to defend themselves. by rimy ♥ of btn! |
